Oh Canada! Andreescu & Fernandez Fall Short in Tokyo Quarters
It was a tough day for Canadian tennis fans in Tokyo. Both Bianca Andreescu and Leylah Fernandez, who were hoping to make a deep run in the Japan Open, were knocked out in the quarterfinals.
Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, fell to American Madison Keys in a hard-fought three-set match. It was a real nail-biter, with the Canadian ultimately losing 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Andreescu, known for her powerful game, struggled to control her shots, especially on the backhand side, and had trouble breaking Keys' serve.
Fernandez, the 2021 US Open runner-up, was also up against a tough opponent in Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan. Fernandez fought hard but couldn't keep up with Rybakina's aggressive style of play, ultimately losing 6-2, 6-4.
This early exit is a bit of a bummer for both players. They were both looking to build momentum heading into the US Open, which starts in a few weeks. Hopefully, they can use this experience as a learning opportunity and come back stronger.
The future is bright for these two young stars. They've already achieved so much, and they're only going to get better. We'll be cheering them on at the US Open, no doubt!
