Aston Villa Player Grades: Bologna Clash - A Mixed Bag in Italy

Alright, Villa fans, let's break down that pre-season clash against Bologna. It was a mixed bag, with some lads shining brighter than others. We've got the grades, so let's dive in!

Goalkeeper: Emi Martinez (7/10)

Emi was solid as usual. He made a couple of decent saves and commanded his box well. No major howlers, which is a good thing.

Defenders:

  • Matty Cash (6/10): Matty looked alright, but wasn't his usual marauding self going forward. He did a decent job defensively though.
  • Ezri Konsa (7/10): Konsa was a rock at the back. Strong in the air, good positioning. Exactly what we need from our center-backs.
  • Tyrone Mings (6/10): Mings was solid enough. He had a couple of shaky moments, but overall a good performance.
  • Lucas Digne (7/10): Digne was a constant threat down the left. He whipped in some dangerous crosses and looked sharp.

Midfielders:

  • Douglas Luiz (7/10): Douglas was his usual self, controlling the tempo of the game. A bit more adventurous with his passing this time, which is exciting.
  • John McGinn (6/10): McGinn was busy in the middle of the park, but didn't really stand out. He'll need to find his groove in the coming games.
  • Boubacar Kamara (7/10): Kamara looked like he's going to be a real asset for us. Strong, composed, and a real ball-winner. He's going to be a top player.

Forwards:

  • Leon Bailey (6/10): Bailey was lively, but his final product wasn't quite there. He needs to be more clinical in front of goal.
  • Ollie Watkins (8/10): Watkins was the star of the show! He was constantly causing problems for the Bologna defense and bagged a goal. That's the Ollie we know and love.
  • Danny Ings (7/10): Ings was a good outlet for the team. He held the ball up well and looked sharp in the box. He's ready to contribute this season.

Substitutes:

  • Jaden Philogene-Bidace (7/10): Jaden came on and looked really good. He was direct and dangerous. He's got a bright future ahead of him.
  • Cameron Archer (6/10): Archer came on and was a nuisance to the Bologna defense. He's got a lot of talent and will hopefully get more chances this season.

Overall: It was a good pre-season workout for Villa. We saw some encouraging signs from the new signings, and the team looked sharp overall. There's still work to be done, but it's shaping up to be a promising season.

Let's keep this positive energy going Villa fans! Up the Villa!
