NGV End in Sight: Loke Sets 2025 Deadline
It's official, folks! The end of the road for NGVs (Natural Gas Vehicles) in Malaysia is finally in sight. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, better known as Loke, has boldly declared a 2025 deadline for phasing out these gas-guzzlers.
But what exactly does this mean? Well, it means that come 2025, no more new NGVs will be registered. While existing NGVs can still be used, there will be no more fresh additions to the fleet. This decision is a huge step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future for Malaysia's transport sector.
Why the shift away from NGVs? Well, for starters, they haven't lived up to the hype. While they were initially marketed as a greener alternative to petrol-powered vehicles, their impact on the environment has proven to be underwhelming. Also, there's the issue of the infrastructure - there simply aren't enough NGV refueling stations in Malaysia to support a large-scale adoption of the technology.
The future is electric! Loke has been clear about his vision for the future - Malaysia needs to embrace electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles to achieve a truly sustainable transportation system. The government is already making moves in this direction, with incentives and support programs to encourage the adoption of EVs.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves! While the deadline is a bold move, it's not without its challenges. The transition to EVs requires a significant investment in charging infrastructure, not to mention a change in mindset for both consumers and businesses.
Nevertheless, this is a positive step towards a greener future. Let's hope that Malaysia is able to overcome the challenges and make the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable transport system a reality.
