Enter the Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO)
Established in 2016, the PDCO is NASA's dedicated team for tracking and mitigating the risk of asteroids and comets impacting Earth. They've got their eyes on the sky, constantly scanning for near-Earth objects (NEOs) - those space rocks that pass within 30 million miles of our planet.
The Importance of Early Detection
The PDCO's mission is to find these NEOs as early as possible, so we can predict their trajectory and assess the potential danger. Early detection gives scientists time to develop a plan, allowing us to respond effectively.
More Than Just Watching
While monitoring is crucial, the PDCO is also developing strategies to deflect or disrupt any asteroid on a collision course with Earth. One of their most promising projects is the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission.
DART: A Test Run for Planetary Defense
Launched in 2021, DART is the first ever planetary defense mission designed to test a method of deflecting an asteroid. The spacecraft is headed for Didymos, a binary asteroid system. DART will intentionally crash into the smaller asteroid, Dimorphos, in an attempt to alter its orbit.
The Impact of DART
The impact, scheduled for September 2022, won't destroy the asteroid. Instead, it will provide scientists with valuable data about the effectiveness of the kinetic impact technique. The information gathered will help us understand how to deflect future asteroids that could pose a threat.
