Q&A: Melanie Freeman, Cabarrus School Board Race

It's election season in Cabarrus County, and the school board race is heating up! We sat down with candidate Melanie Freeman to get her take on the issues and learn more about her vision for the future of Cabarrus County Schools.

So, Melanie, tell us a little about yourself. What makes you a good fit for the school board?

"Well, I've been a teacher in Cabarrus County for over 15 years. I've seen firsthand the challenges and triumphs of our schools. I'm passionate about education and want to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed. I believe my experience as a teacher and my commitment to the community make me a strong candidate."

What are the biggest issues facing Cabarrus County Schools right now?

"I think the biggest issue is teacher retention. We're losing great teachers to other districts, and that's a major problem. We need to make sure our teachers are well-compensated and supported. Another big issue is funding - the district is facing some budget cuts, and we need to be creative about making the most of every dollar. Finally, we need to make sure equity is at the forefront of every decision. Every child deserves a quality education, regardless of their background."

What are your plans to address these issues?

"I'm a big advocate for raising teacher salaries and improving working conditions. We need to attract and retain top talent. Regarding funding, I'm committed to working with the county commissioners to ensure our schools get the resources they need. And when it comes to equity, I want to make sure we're addressing the needs of all students, especially those from historically marginalized communities."

What are your thoughts on the current curriculum and the role of parental involvement in education?

"I believe in a curriculum that is both rigorous and engaging. We need to equip our students with the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century. Parental involvement is crucial! I want to see more opportunities for parents to participate in the educational process, from school board meetings to classroom activities."

What is your vision for the future of Cabarrus County Schools?

"I envision a school system where every child feels valued, empowered, and prepared to reach their full potential. A system that attracts and retains the best teachers, fosters innovation, and provides equitable access to high-quality education for all."

Is there anything else you'd like to share with the voters of Cabarrus County?

"I'm running for the school board because I believe in the power of education to transform lives. I'm a dedicated, experienced educator who's committed to serving our students and community. I hope you'll give me your vote!"
