Sixers' LA Picks: More Valuable Now?
The Philadelphia 76ers have been busy in recent years, making big moves to try and finally bring a championship back to Philly. One of those moves involved a couple of draft picks that were sent to the Los Angeles Clippers in a deal for Tobias Harris. So, how valuable are those picks now?
The Trade: What Philly Gave Up
The trade that sent Harris to Philly in 2019 was a big one. The Sixers gave up two young players, two future first-round picks (one unprotected and one protected), and a second-round pick. Yeah, that's a lot.
The two first-round picks were the 2021 and 2023 picks from Miami (via the Clippers). And here's where things get interesting. Both of those picks ended up being way better than anyone expected.
The LA Lottery: Two Stars Emerged
In 2021, the Clippers landed Scottie Barnes with the 4th pick. He's quickly become a key player for the Toronto Raptors and looks like a future star. Then in 2023, they landed the 4th pick again and snagged Jordan Hawkins, a talented guard from UConn.
It's a bit early to say for sure, but both Barnes and Hawkins look like legit NBA talents and they could turn out to be cornerstone pieces for the Clippers.
So, Is It a Steal?
The Sixers got their guy in Tobias Harris, a reliable scorer and veteran presence. But they clearly didn't get the same value as the Clippers did with those picks. In a way, the Sixers lost out on some serious potential.
It's hard to say for sure whether those picks were worth it for the Sixers. They were willing to give up a lot to win now, and the trade was certainly a gamble. But right now, it's looking like a gamble that didn't pay off for Philly.
Lessons Learned?
The Sixers' gamble on Harris has been frustrating. They've had some success with him on the team but they haven't gotten to the championship level they hoped for.
This situation is a good reminder that draft picks are extremely valuable. You don't want to just give them away for a player who may not turn out to be a difference-maker. But then again, you don't want to let a big-time player like Harris slip away either.
It's a tough balance, and the Sixers will likely have to figure out how to find that balance in the future. Hopefully, they learn from their mistakes.
