Stalker 2 Review: Zoned Out

Let's be honest, folks. We've all been hyped for Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl. A true sequel to a legendary franchise? Sign me up! But after spending some serious time in the Zone, I'm left with a bittersweet feeling – a game with incredible potential, sadly hampered by some serious issues. It’s like a delicious pizza with a weirdly sour crust.

A Gorgeous, Glitchy Wasteland

Visually, Stalker 2 is stunning. Seriously, jaw-dropping. The environments are breathtaking. The detail in the overgrown buildings, the eerie atmosphere of the abandoned towns… it's all ridiculously beautiful. You'll find yourself constantly stopping to take screenshots. But, and this is a big but, that beauty is often marred by some pretty significant glitches. I've seen NPCs teleport, textures fail to load, and even some serious frame rate drops. It's a shame because the world they built is truly captivating.

The gameplay itself is a bit of a mixed bag. The core loop of exploration, scavenging, and survival is engaging. You'll be constantly on edge, never quite sure what lurks around the corner. The combat, while not revolutionary, is satisfying enough. But the AI is... well, let's just say it needs some work. Enemies often behave unpredictably, sometimes incredibly stupid and other times terrifyingly effective. It’s inconsistent, which is frustrating.

Story and Characters: A Work in Progress

The story is... okay. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s got some intriguing elements. The characters, however, are somewhat underdeveloped. They lack depth, and their motivations often feel unclear. I’m going to level with you. The optimization is a major problem. Even on high-end hardware, I experienced noticeable performance issues. This is unacceptable for a game released in 2023.
