Nicole Scherzinger Slays in 'Sunset Blvd.' - But Is It Enough?
It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Nicole Scherzinger. From her days with the Pussycat Dolls to her impressive solo career, she’s always wowed me with her vocals and stage presence. So, naturally, I was beyond excited to see her take on the iconic role of Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber's “Sunset Blvd.”
The show, a gothic melodrama about a fading silent film star who falls for a young screenwriter, is a classic for a reason. But seeing it in person, with Scherzinger at the helm, was a whole other experience. The woman has pipes! Her voice soared through the theater, filling every corner with raw emotion. She truly embodied Norma’s desperation and delusion, her voice cracking with sadness and rage in equal measure. I felt the raw energy coming from her, it was incredible.
But here’s the thing. While Scherzinger nailed the performance, I felt the show itself was a bit… dated. The plot, though iconic, felt a little stale at times. It's not like the show hasn't had its ups and downs over the years, but some aspects felt like they needed a refresh. Don’t get me wrong, the music is still amazing – I’m especially partial to "With One Look” – but the overall story felt a bit… meh.
The Verdict: This is a must-see for Nicole Scherzinger fans. Her performance alone is worth the price of admission. But if you're expecting a groundbreaking production, you might be slightly disappointed. It's a classic for a reason, but it's time for a bit of a facelift.
