'Venom: Let There Be Carnage' Review: Bad on Purpose?
You know that feeling when you watch a movie and you're just not sure if it's bad on purpose? Like, they knew it was bad, but they did it anyway. That's the vibe I got from "Venom: Let There Be Carnage."
The Story, or Lack Thereof
Let's face it, the plot of "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" is pretty thin. It's like a bad superhero movie from the early 2000s, where the villains are just generic bad guys with a vague plan to destroy the world. We've got Carnage, who's basically Venom's evil twin (and much more violent), and he wants to unleash chaos and destruction. It's all pretty standard stuff.
The Humor, or Lack Thereof
The movie tries to be funny, with Eddie Brock making jokes and Venom cracking wise. But most of the humor falls flat, like a bad punchline. The movie leans heavily on over-the-top action, CGI, and gore, all of which is fine, but it doesn't make up for the lack of substance.
The Performances, or Lack Thereof
Tom Hardy does his best with the material, but it's tough to make a character that's essentially a talking symbiote seem charismatic. Woody Harrelson is a bit more entertaining as Carnage, but even he can't salvage the movie.
The Verdict
"Venom: Let There Be Carnage" is a pretty disappointing movie. It's loud, it's messy, and it's not particularly entertaining. It's like the movie was designed to appeal to a certain kind of audience, but even that audience might find it a bit too much.
Is it bad on purpose? I'm not sure. Maybe they were trying to make a "so bad it's good" kind of movie. But I'm not sure they succeeded. Maybe it's just a bad movie.
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for a fun, exciting superhero flick, "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" is not the one. But if you're looking for a movie that will make you shake your head and wonder what they were thinking, then go for it.
