Wolves Boss Furious Over "Stonewalling" City Goal
It's a day Wolves fans will want to forget. Not only did their team lose 2-0 to Manchester City, but the second goal, a controversial penalty awarded after a VAR review, has left manager Bruno Lage fuming.
The incident in question happened in the 75th minute, with the score at 1-0. City's Jack Grealish went down in the box after a challenge from Wolves' defender, Jonny. Referee Anthony Taylor initially waved play on, but the VAR intervened, urging him to check the monitor. After reviewing the footage, Taylor pointed to the spot, giving City a penalty that was duly converted by Riyad Mahrez.
Lage was livid. "It's a joke," he said after the match. "I don't know what the VAR is looking at. It's a clear foul on Jonny, a blatant push in the back, but somehow it's a penalty against us. It's just not right, man. It's stonewalling!"
Adding insult to injury, Lage claimed that the officials had failed to give his team a penalty earlier in the game, when Matheus Cunha went down under a challenge from City's John Stones. "It's two penalties, one for them and one for us," he said. "But only one gets given. It's frustrating, really. I don't want to complain too much, but come on, it's just not fair."
The result means Wolves remain in 13th place in the Premier League table, while City consolidate their position at the top. But for Lage and his team, the talking point will undoubtedly be the controversial VAR decision, leaving them feeling like they were robbed.
